This site has been a beautiful archive of past episodes of CFRU’s “Mobile Community Radio Show”, a project that has been dormant since the shift to remote/pandemic-operations in March 2020, at which point this project shifted to a virtual format, and CFRU’s “Volunteer and Mobile Studio Coordinator” Jenny Mitchell started hosting “Bridging the Social Distance”. “Bridging the Social Distance” is a show that aims to give a platform for sharing ideas, perspectives and feelings in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Interviews feature local Guelphites as well as people living elsewhere around the world. Like the Mobile Community Radio Show, the goal of the show is to get more/different/additional/diverse stories onto CFRU’s airwaves. Instead of the physical studio that we would previously set up in neighbourhood group spaces, schools, retirement centres etc, Jenny “visits” locations like these virtually, using platforms such as Zoom. There have been silver linings to this – Jenny can now “travel the world” to make these connections, without being limited to the physical boundaries of our mobile equipment. Guests can show up from the comfort of their own spaces, with fewer physical obstacles. To make sure local seniors have still been able to participate, staff at care facilities have taken on the support role of providing and operating equipment to residents, so they are able to take part without having to learn additional technologies, and the shift to remote-learning meant many school-age participants could shift to doing radio projects through their own computers even while we haven’t been able to visit schools. There have now been as many episodes recorded of “Bridging the Social Distance” in the nearly two-years that it has existed, as the entirety of the Mobile Community Radio Show! Which is surreal and fantastic. Between the two programs we have probably had over a thousand people’s voices on our airwaves we may not have otherwise heard. So much magic!
